Social Media is Destroying a Generation of Young People — Especially Women
If Anybody Else Did This to Young People, We’d Use Words Like Grooming, Abuse, and Pedophilia
You see that chart above? It shows something that should deeply alarm you. Suicide rates have skyrocketed in young women and girls, since around 2009. What happened in 2009? Social media became available on smartphones.
If someone was literally hurting your kids, violating their boundaries, abusing them — or worse, making your kids hurt themselves, what would you do? It’s a horrific question. I’m sorry to ask it. Just asking probably makes your hackles rise. Good. They should.
What would you call it if someone was making your kids hurt each other, even if they didn’t want to? The technical term would be “human trafficking.” And I hate to tell you this, and you’ll probably “disagree” with me, in that annoying, thoughtless way Americans love to do — but that’s exactly what’s happening, in plain sight. I know, I know. Go ahead and shout at me. It’s your kids you should care about, dummy.
Today in horrific news comes the revelation that social media is traumatising our kids — badly. Much more badly than you probably think or know.
Maybe you think that’s not a revelation — great, keep reading and tell me if you’re not shocked and angry by the end.
